Experimental Beer

A catch-all for innovative beers that intentionally push beyond established styles — novel ingredients, techniques, or flavor concepts.

Also known as Experimental Ale, Experimental Beer (Lager or Ale)

A catch-all for innovative beers that intentionally push beyond established styles — novel ingredients, techniques, or flavor concepts. By definition there is no target profile; the category rewards originality over adherence to type.

Origin

Modern craft brewing prizes novelty, and brewers routinely build beers around ideas that no existing style describes. This category was created to celebrate that impulse rather than penalize it, giving genuinely new beers a place to be judged on their own terms.

Notes

The label for beers that are doing something genuinely new. Expect the unexpected; the brewer is exploring rather than reproducing a known style.

Defining examples

(varies — any experimental or innovative beer)
